AKB48 is a Japanese idol group produced by Yasushi Akimoto.

This group has gained high popularity in Japan. Their last ten successful singles topped the Oricon weekly charts. "Beginner" and "Heavy Rotation" respectively ranked first and second in the list of biggest-selling single in Japan in 2010, while "Everyday, Kachūsha", "Sakura no Ki ni Naro", and "Flying Get" lead in the rankings so far in 2011. A variety of albums and singles AKB48 has sold more than ten million copies.

The name is taken from Akihabara AKB48, an area in Tokyo where on the 8th floor of the Don Quijote store is located belongs to the theater this group. The idea Akimoto, who later introduced as "the idol that you can meet", is making an idol group based theater where fans can see them every day.AKB48 still perform in the theater every day, but due to huge demand for tickets is now only distributed through a lottery.

AKB48 is the holder of the Guinness World Records as the biggest pop group in the world. AKB48 currently consists of four teams: Team A, Team K and Team B with a number of members of each of 16 individuals and four teams consisting of 11 people, a total of 59 members up to 2 September 2011.  team produces a new concert every theatrical season.

Since 2005 when AKB48 stand, Yasushi Akimoto formed several other groups: SKE48 a theater based in Sakae, Nagoya; SDN48, NMB48, and JKT48 which is the first group of sisters who are based outside the country.

Another concept which was first introduced in 2009 is the election where the fans vote to elect members who will participate in the next AKB48 singles record. In the last elections conducted in June-July 2011 and collected more than one million votes, was elected 40 people from 152 members of AKB48, SKE48, SDN48, and NMB48. In 2010, appeared a new selection method; its members compete with each other in a tournament rock-paper-scissors to can participate in the singles chart. The second tournament was held on 20 September 2011.
